SHYLOCK V. ANTONIO
by PETER FILICHIA
Presented by the Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida in association with Yiddishkayt Initiative.
Peter Filichia’s fresh and prosaic take on Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice turns the problematic character of Shylock into a portrait of redemption, as the moneylender struggles against prejudice in Venice, Italy circa 1638 to demonstrate his ability to overcome a deep urge for retribution. The staged reading features members of the Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida with Yiddishkayt Initiative Founder Avi Hoffman in the title role.
A talkback will explore the circumstances under which the playwright has written an antidote to the labelling of anti-Semitism that some Shakespearean critics see in the original work.
