A new play blending Overtown history, Shakespearean drama, live jazz and archival footage will debut in museum readings at NSU Art Museum and PAMM this July.
The story of Purvis Young — the self-taught Miami artist whose work captured the soul, struggle and movement of Overtown is heading to the stage in a new play that blends art, history, live jazz and Shakespearean drama.
The full-play readings of Othello of Overtown will take place Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 1–3 p.m. at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale during the museum’s Free First Thursday, followed by a second reading Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 1–3 p.m. at Pérez Art Museum Miami during Family Fun Day.
